This week we continued the all-important start up process. I know we are all stretching our ability to be patient with ourselves and with others as we each play in class. Soon we will be playing together and making the right kind of noise: music!!
Please continue to work on assembling your instrument correctly, setting aside time in your schedule to practice, sitting down properly, feet flat on the ground, back straight, chin level, holding the instrument properly with hands in "Home" position, and creating sound with the correct embouchure (mouth position). Please watch the videos in last week's post if you are still unsure about any of those steps.
Your assignment for this week is to complete the exercises on Page 4 and 5 of the book (Essential Elements for Band). Practice memorizing the fingerings and note names. It will likely take more than one week to memorize all 5 notes, but do the best you can to start programming those fingerings into your hands and brain! Many, many beginner songs can be played with your first 5 notes, so the quicker we memorize our finger positions and produce a tone on these notes, the sooner we can start playing those many songs! Oh the fun that awaits! Like most well earned fun, the work you have to put in will be worth it, but it may be hard for a few weeks. Remember, when we got these instruments, we didn't get the "easy" version flute or clarinet (cause there isn't one!). Your instrument works and is played the same as a professional flute or clarinet--sure, the pros have fancier instruments, but they work the same. In other words, this is HARD WORK you are doing right now. Be gentle with yourselves as you learn to play these super hard instruments-- you WILL get it with perseverance and work. Don't give up! I'm here to help you and you absolutely CAN DO IT!
This week you will fill in your practice log on the row labeled "Week 3." Find the square on Week 3 that has the date you are practicing on and write the number of minutes that you practice in that square. Be sure to have your practice log signed by your parent/guardian after practicing for at least 30 minutes this week.
For our homework you will need the book: Essential Elements for Band - Book 1 (Yellow Book)
If you do not have the book yet, you can buy it at the Magic Flute Music Store or order it online from the publisher (Hal Leonard) or from Amazon. Be certain to get the correct book for your instrument; flute or clarinet. Also, be sure it is in English, as some have accidentally ordered the French version, which makes it a little harder to read, unless you're fluent in French ;)
